Organizers of the 16th annual Regatta Art Competition saw a good turnout for the prize ceremony on Sunday the 15th of February. Awards were handed out to the different winners of the Art Competition, there were prizes for all different age groups and assignments.  Many artworks were submitted and judges were happily surprised by the creativity and talent of the children. After prize giving the children stood patiently in line to get their faces painted by the Funtopia crew which made it a great ending of a fun-filled afternoon.
For the 16th edition of the Regatta Art Competition, children aged 7 – 18 years old from all over Dutch Sint Maarten created spectacular artworks. Like last year, there were five different age groups. These different age groups had 2 or 3 assignments from which the children could choose. Assignments ranged from making paintings, creating glass candle holders and making a wind chime to designing a logo for next year’s Regatta Art Competition.
This year the judge panel was a little bit smaller than usually. La Rich, owner of Funtopia and Tony Parisi, local artist and loyal Regatta volunteer, did the judging together. It was sometimes a bit difficult for the judges to decide who was going to be the winner as there were so many excellent submissions, but eventually they managed to come with a first, second and third place for every category.
During the prize giving, winners were awarded with fantastic prizes by organizer Daphne van der Peijl. “This organization relies fully on donations from local businesses and they, again, stepped up to the plate this year. Being able to hand out a variety of trips and gift certificates, like a snorkel trip, a day at the Butterfly Farm and even a Winair ticket to St. Kits or St. Nevis, makes this such a great competition to enter. It was a great turnout at the prize giving and the winners left with a big smile on their faces.” she said afterwards.
The organizers would like to thank all participating schools, children, volunteers and all companies who donated prizes! The organization encourages everybody who participated to participate again in 2016 for the 17th edition of the Regatta Art Competition.
