One of the most unique features of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is the long standing Sol Water taxi service which is free to all competitors racing in the event. This service which operates daily on all racing days has been sponsored by Sol petroleum for a remarkable 16 years. The water taxi service has been in continuous operation since the 1995 regatta and has become an essential component of the event. Service will run from March 3rd to March 6th 2016 from 07.00 to 10.00 and from 14.00 to 01.00.
The Sol Group is the premier supplier of petroleum products in the Caribbean and their dedication to the region and the event can be seen in the long term commitment that they have made to the sailors who take part in the regatta each year. “For an event to have such a long standing partnership, given the economy and high level of competitiveness for events seeking sponsors, we are blessed to be able to count on the commitment from Sol once again this year.” Commented Regatta Director Michelle van der Werff.
Sol’s participation in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta has evolved throughout the years and they have assisted the event in the past with achieving their Clean Regatta certification by donating Oil Spill Pads to all the entrants. Sol continues to work closely with the regatta to assure that the water taxi service is the best in the region.
David Antrobus, Sol’s General Manager in St. Maarten said that “Sol is pleased to continue their support of the official water taxi service to the competitors at the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. Our sponsorship of this service is just one of the activities which allows us to contribute to the community within which we operate our business and especially with the fact that it allows us to promote St. Maarten as a destination with a strong marine sector.”
The service allows participants to enjoy the regatta without having to sort out logistics of storing and retrieving a dinghy every day. It also means that entrants can easily anchor out in the bay, saving them from being reliant on the bridge openings. The marinas are not able to accommodate all 200 or so entries, which makes anchoring out and using the Sol Water taxi service the perfect solution for those not staying on the docks.
Accessing the Sol Water taxi is rather simple, boats are provided with a printed pack of additional information which includes an anchor zone. It is important that competitors stick to the anchor zones assigned to them, as this assists the drivers with locating their boats. Boats anchored outside of these designated areas will not be serviced. The Sol Water taxis will operate between the Sint Maarten Yacht Club and the designated anchor zones.
All competitor boats will receive a Sol flag for use during the daylight hours. This flag can be hoisted on the backstay or the starboard shrouds and will indicate to the Sol Water taxi drivers that you are requesting a ride. For night time service they can hang the provided FIJI glow stick on the starboard lifelines. Drivers will be regularly patrol the areas during the high traffic times. The volunteers manning the fleet are all seasoned drivers and fully licensed.
Look for signage at the Yacht Club dock and enjoy your ride back to your boat, the event looks forward to one more year of Serious Fun.
