The race round island KRK that starts on 7th September and is unique in many ways: Not only that two clubs are organizers, and exchange finish start places in two small towns Selce and Novi Vinodolski, but it is a very demanding 60 miles rhumb line round island course that starts at 7:00pm and goes deep in the night with many wind changes shifts and no time to rest.
We decide to come again as we raced in 2016 and won in our class with a crew of four! This time two of our crew members cancelled last minute, so we had to sail with the two of is. It was not the first time for us to sail with just the two of us, but we had never done a race all by ourselves that could take up to 20 hours. While #sxmstrong we will take this challenge too! Decision made and lets go.
The start was pretty good,  flying kite to the first way point, then sail into the dark. Light winds and no wind prediction made the race very tricky.  All night long we were fighting for the best spot without parking zones/ wind holes.
The morning found us when we were on the west side of the island in almost zero wind. We crossed the spectacular passage under the KRK bridge 200 feet above us. We raced through the channel, which means kite up – kite down –  jib change – repeat. Real work! Light winds continued for the rest of the day and 20 hours later we crossed the finish line.  To reward the great achievement, we became first in our group!
The Final party was held in the new MITAN MARINA. We met new friends, cheered with old ones and spread our loving word about the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. At the final prize giving ceremony the  ‘Race round KRK island – Croatia’- organisation gave us the opportunity to talk about the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. We had great time and definitely will come again!
To be continued: Heineken Regatta European Tour!
Cheers,
Ben & Sabine.
