40 years strong and it just keeps getting better. Four days of world-class racing with some of the world’s most seasoned sailors, from more than 35 countries, sailing Maxis, Monohulls and Performance Multihulls to holiday-makers on chartered Bareboats and live-aboard families cruising the Caribbean. Crystal clear waters and cooling northeast trade winds give the pristine conditions for spectacular racing just off the coast of St. Maarten. And with Heineken as title sponsor, the racing days blend seamlessly into four nights of exceptional parties. This event is your bucket list must-do! Come and enjoy life in the Caribbean, come for some Serious Fun from March 5-8, 2020!
ST. MAARTEN HEINEKEN REGATTA
The 40th St. Maarten Heineken Regatta takes place: March 5th – March 8th, 2020!
In 1980, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta started as the St. Maarten Regatta with a modest 12 sail boats participating. Three years later, in 1983, Heineken became a major sponsor of the St. Maarten Regatta and ‘Heineken’ was added to the name of the event. Heineken participated with a fee of 3,750 guilders (approximately $ 2,100). As a bonus, the competitors received ice cold Heineken beers from a passing powerboat while they were racing.
After the involvement of Heineken, the event grew fast. With the addition of a third day in 1990, the event grew to 187 boats in 1995 and 251 boats in 1999. Another racing day, the Commodore’s Cup, was added in 2005. The record amount of boats participating in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta was in 2008 with 284 boats.
SERIOUS FUN RACING
Set in the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean, powered by the cooling northeast trade winds and run by an experienced, innovative and friendly race team, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is four days of world-class racing in idyllic conditions appealing to a broad range of tastes. Our four race committees provide custom-tailored racing for the thousands of sailors from more than 35 countries that come to race: from Olympic medalists and World Champions sailing Maxis and Performance Multihulls to holiday-makers on chartered Bareboats and live-aboard families cruising the Caribbean.
This year is the first day that there are 4 days of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, sailors are offered a mixture of races with a combination of windward-leeward and coastal races blended together into an irresistible cocktail of racing chosen to suit each class. As the all-out racing monohulls savor the prospect of eight races over four days with windward-leeward races on two days and two longer coastal races testing both boat handling and tactics, it’s easy to understand why the regatta attracts a large competitive classes of 40ft and 50ft cruiser-racers. Non-spinnaker cruising boats get more varied courses with less emphasis on tight maneuvers but lots of strategic opportunities to keep the racing tight. Maxis and Multihulls have their own race areas to stretch their legs with races suited to their sailing styles: an emphasis on coastal races with fewer windward legs for cruising-style multihulls and longer more challenging races for Performance Multihulls and Maxis. Live-aboard cruisers and others just wanting to be a part of the regatta get one medium-length race per day with a leisurely start time and the emphasis definitely more “Fun” than “Serious”.

EUROPEAN TOUR
St. Maarten Heineken Regatta boat
Proud to race under the St. Maarten Yacht Club flag, racing sailors Ben and Sabine Jelic from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club travel to compete in European racing events and bring back their experiences (and trophies!) to the island.
St. Maarten Heineken Regatta boat
If you know Ben & Sabine Jelic well, they love spending their summers in Europe and if you know them very well, you know it’s not without yacht racing! Ben reports they jumped on an opportunity to purchase a Melges 24 from a French Quantum racing team in Hyeres, (south of France) which was sitting in a yard for seven years. This Melges not only had a great reputation as being extremely fast but it had always been in good hands, as the first owner of the boat was Harry Melges, who had won the Melges Worlds in that very boat in 1998. Once acquiring the Melges in late July, they decided to do as many races as possible near Croatia and Italy. While racing, they received a lot of attention for not only being extremely competitive, but how exotic they were perceived coming all the way from St. Maarten in the Caribbean! They were surprised at how many people knew and were connected with St. Maarten and the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. “We were so proud being the ambassadors of Caribbean racing, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and the Sint Maarten Yacht Club,” declared Ben. Their journey began in Autria with the Attersee Austria grand prix long distance regatta, and went on to Croatia and Italy where they sailed the International Regatta Croatia powered by Heineken, the Bluesband Regatta, the Porto Picollo, the Barcolana and the Trofeo Bernetti Regatta. The Barcalona regatta is crazy, historical and legendary, with no less than 1,755 boats on the same start line. With an adrenalin pumping wind of 20-25 knots, ‘Wild Devil’s Baby’ fought for position, all while trying not to damage their boat. Ben declared, “It was like a parade of racing boats, from maxis, to TP52s, to skiffs and more!” Ben, Sabine and the crew of the ‘Wild Devil’s Baby’ were ecstatic to finish the season on a high note, make a vast amount of new friends, show a great performance, hold their heads high at the end of each race and had endless amounts of fun. Follow Sabine and Ben in their European Tour from July – August, 2018 by following us on Facebook!
